JAKARTA-PKRI INFO, (June 17, 2025) – A bold and monumental step has been initiated by the nation’s children. The proposal to establish Batak language as an international language will be officially submitted to the United Nations (UN) by the Initiator Team consisting of community leaders and Batak diaspora from around the world.
This proposal has received full support from the Chairman of the DPP _Penerus Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia (PKRI)_, Totop Troitua, ST., MH, who sees this initiative as part of the struggle for Indonesia’s cultural sovereignty in the global arena.
“Batak language is not just a means of communication, but it is the soul, identity, and dignity of a local civilization that has been deeply rooted for centuries. Support for this proposal is support for the diversity and richness of world culture,” said Totop Troitua in his official statement (17/6).
As one of the oldest ethnic languages in Indonesia, Batak language has its own script (Aksara Batak), various dialects, and oral literature containing noble values such as umpasa (pantun), umpama (proverbs), and adat poetry, as well as calendars and many other rich cultural heritage. This language has transcended the boundaries of North Sumatra and now lives among the Batak diaspora in Europe, America, Australia, and various parts of the world, even in the Polar regions.
The proposed proposal conveys the hope that Batak language, particularly the Toba dialect as the main representation, can be recognized as an international language by the _UN and UNESCO_. The goal is not only as a symbol of ethnic pride but also as an effort to present ethnic languages as a bridge of unity among nations and a symbol of intercultural tolerance.
“Because there is no language that comes from a traditional ethnic group that has been officially established as an international language,” he added.
The strategic steps proposed include: official submission to international institutions, global campaigns through digital media, development of cross-cultural curricula, and cooperation with international education and cultural institutions.
This establishment is believed to provide many benefits, ranging from global aspects (tolerance and cross-cultural understanding), cultural (strengthening local identity), education (development of cultural curricula), to international cultural diplomacy.
“It’s time for the world to give space to languages born from traditional roots, not just from economic and political dominant,” said one of the members of the Inisiator Team.
The people of Indonesia, especially the Batak community around the world, are invited to unite in supporting this initiative as part of the movement to preserve world languages and culture. Batak language is the voice of civilization. Now is the time for that voice to be heard by the world. “Let’s unite our hearts, so that Batak language becomes an international language,” he concluded.(CNN/com).
